Da Dao centers on the pivotal 1933 Battle of Xifengkou, one of the most crucial engagements of the Great Wall Resistance during the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The film portrays the National Revolutionary Army’s 29th Corps as they confront heavily mechanized Japanese forces with only da dao broadswords, rifles, and limited equipment—fighting with extraordinary resolve at a moment when the nation stood on the brink of destruction.
Grounded in historical events, the film uses a multi-perspective narrative to depict the courage, sacrifice, and collective will demonstrated by frontline soldiers, commanding officers, and ordinary civilians as they faced overwhelming odds. Situated at the strategically vital Xifengkou Pass—where rugged terrain and narrow defiles formed the heart of the Great Wall defense—the 29th Corps, known for its famed “Da Dao Unit,” fought in brutal close-quarters combat, creating one of the most unforgettable and heroic chapters of the Great Wall engagements.
